Artist’s Statement
I began this journey as a photographic study of the sky from the same place at approximately the same time for each day in April. I travel home from work along this route every day and regardless of the sort of day I’ve had, I always look forward to seeing the sky from this vantage point. At the top of the Grove Way the sky is really enormous! Some days it would be dramatic, other days just blue, but every day it was a treat. So there was a juxtaposition; my daily routine set against an ever changing, ever moving sky.
I began to wonder how I could convey the idea that the sky is one of those free, beautiful treasures for us to enjoy on a daily basis. After adding the Shakespeare quote to one of my experimental sky paintings, (Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow, creeps in this petty pace from day to day…) I began to think about our daily routines and the word diurnal came to mind. I looked up ‘body clock’ and diurnal rhythms and tried to juxtapose the text from those with images of the sky. In the meantime I continued to take my daily photograph and ponder why I began this routine in the first place.

Quite literally, this piece is about tearing enough space out of each day to push aside other responsibilities and become an observer of the sky -
